National Park, Baby Elephants & Giraffe Centre

About this experience

This is the Nairobi day most visitors end up on. Your driver and guide collect you from your hotel between 5:20 and 6:00am and head for Nairobi National Park, where the game drive runs for about 4.5 hours through open grassland, acacia woodland and the wooded river areas, with the high-rise city on the horizon. The listing names lions, leopards, buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hyenas among what you may see. Sightings vary, and the guide explains what you are looking at as you go.

At 11am you join the public hour at the Sheldrick elephant nursery, where the keepers bring out the rescued calves and tell their stories. Then comes a lunch stop at a restaurant, an optional look round the Kobe Beads and leather workshop, and the last stop: the Giraffe Centre in Lang'ata, home of the Rothschild's giraffe, now usually classified as the Nubian giraffe. You ride in a 4x4 or a van with an open roof. GetYourGuide lists it at 5 hours, but the listing calls it a full-day trip, and with that early start it fills most of the day.

The price covers the pickup, the vehicle, the driver-guide, the game drive, a bottle of water and the stop at the bead workshop. Three entry fees are paid on the day, per the listing: the park ticket (US$80 per non-resident adult under the 2025 KWS rates (Legal Notice 160 of 2025); check KWS or eCitizen before you go), the elephant orphanage at US$20 and the Giraffe Centre at "$15" (the centre's own rate is KSh 1,500 per non-resident adult (about US$11 to 12 at the Central Bank of Kenya rate of October 2026)). Lunch is extra too. Bring a card for the park and the giraffes and US dollars in cash for the elephants, and the day runs smoothly. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and you can reserve now and pay later.

Lucky and Ben were fantastic guides today! Lucky was very knowledgeable and funny, and Ben was a great driver - we were so lucky to see a few lions and so many rhinos. The elephant conservancy was very educational, and feeding the giraffes was an absolute highlight. [...] We had a wonderful day!

From beginning to end this was a fabulous experience. I highly recommend it! Lachy was so knowledgeable and we learnt so much. [...] We saw rhino, hippo, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, crocodile, impala, antelope, lion, eagle, vulture and various types of birds. It was worth every penny.

I had an amazing duo of guide (Lucky) and driver (Ben). It was by far one of the best Safaris I've had anywhere in Africa. [...] 100% highly recommend.

Tips before you book

  • Bring a card for the park and the giraffes and US dollars in cash for the elephants. Set up an eCitizen account before the day so the park ticket is quick. The Giraffe Centre takes M-Pesa, Visa and Mastercard, per its own FAQ, so a card covers the giraffes.
  • Carry your passport. Under Legal Notice 160 of 2025, non-residents show a valid passport for entry to KWS parks. Kenyan residents and citizens bring their ID, per the listing.
  • Check that your hotel is inside the pickup area. The listing leaves out airport hotels and a few outlying areas.
  • Mornings on the plains are cool. Pack a layer, a sun hat and sunglasses, as the listing suggests.
  • October to December is the short rains season. The Kenya Meteorological Department expects above-average rain in Nairobi this season, running into January, so pack a light rain jacket.
